Doctor Who

A retrospective look back at one of Mary's most famous roles...

One of Mary's most notable roles to her fans is that of Romana in Doctor Who. She took a starring role along side Tom Baker, the show's most enduring and successful lead, for one season in the ever-popular SF series from 1976-1977. Cast by Graham Williams, she performed in a unique season called The Key to Time, which, unusually for the series, had an on-going storyline through out the year's serials.
The Key to Time saw the Doctor called by the White Guardian, played by Cyril Luckham, to assemble a powerful cosmic device scattered through out the Universe. And to aid the Doctor, he was given the help of Romanadvoratrelunder, or Romana for short, who was herself, a fellow Timelord.

The unique basis of the character allowed Mary to play the role very much of that as an equal to the title character, where as before many previous actresses had been simply seen as assistants. Graham Williams very much wanted Romana to be seen as an Ice Maiden figure, but Mary was still able to inject plenty of warmth and charm into the role.

Mary made the decision to move on from the show after her first year, and has since gone to to continued success on television and in particular, British theatre, where she remains exetremely popular and much in demand.

In all, Mary's time on the show consisted of a total of six serials, which were:

The Ribos Operation
The Pirate Planet
The Stones of Blood
The Androids of Tara
The Power of Kroll
The Armageddon Factor

This season is available as a Region One DVD Boxset release in the USA. Currently there is no news regarding a Region Two (UK) or Region Four (Australia) release as yet.
